French toast’s “French” is not “France”

French toast is a very popular breakfast or a sweet in Japan. It is a bread dipped in sweet egg and toasted on a pan.
It is a common sense to guess that French toast is somehow related to France because... "French"!

However, this may not be true.

Where did the name come from?

The name "French toast" actually came from a guy named "French", who was a shop owner in the US.

He was the one who named the toast in 1724, with his name in it.

However, when French toast arised is still unknown. There is a record that a similar dish was eaten around 4th centuries in many countries in Europe (possibly France too).

Who was wrong?

Many may have thought that French toast was from France, but it was wrong.

We sometimes make a judgement because it seems like it, but it can be very wrong sometimes.

Also, the exact truth about French toast is still unknown. I hope the truth comes out before I die.
